“Calls on Attorneys General to File a Lawsuit,” Mayoral Candidate Toni Preckwinkle Responds to Trump Declaring National Emergency at US Border

Press Release
Feb 15 2019

Today, mayoral candidate Toni Preckwinkle responds to President Trump’s declaration of a national emergency at our southern border by calling on the nation’s Attorneys General to file a lawsuit against the Trump Administration and for the City of Chicago to submit an amicus curiae brief in support of the constitution and the inherent worth of all immigrants.

”This announcement is an abuse of power and a blatant disregard of the separation of power from a reckless president,” said Toni Preckwinkle. “To all the immigrant families of our city and country - I am with you and you are welcome here.”

Toni has been a loud and vocal ally of the undocumented immigrant community in Chicago. As Cook County Board President, Toni opposed ICE cooperation and refused their demands to detain undocumented individuals. Toni has also stated that if elected, she will end the gang database and strengthen Chicago’s Welcoming City Ordinance, which will end invasive ICE demands from local police.
